가까운 미래
당신의 집이 물고기 집이 될지도 모릅니다

지구의 온도는 지금도 올라가고 있습니다.

The video clip, which is linked, is a television commercial that was created by students from a Korean university. The video starts with a family that seems to be returning from a trip, when the father opens the door, he finds a man with a fish head in his house. The delightful music changes in to a mysterious tone and creates a gloomy mood. He turns around the street and realizes that everyone in the neighborhood has turned in to fish. Then the slogan that says ‘In the future, your home might change to a fish bowl’ appears, and a following phrase saying ‘the temperature of earth is still rising’ emerges, which warns the viewers of global warming. The concept of applying what might happen in the future to daily life brought a huge effect. Even though the unrealistic idea that everyone turning in to fish can makes the audience feel threatened and real. At the first time it can be a little silly to see people with fish heads on, but the warning that tells the audience they might have to live under water gives a strong message to them and makes them concern about the global warming. I think that not illustrating the intention of the campaign clearly at the beginning of the video clip makes the audience curious and want to watch the rest of it. Most of the spectators will not understand what it means at the first time, but when the slogan appears, they would totally understand and agree with the commercial. Even though college students have created it, it looked very professional and the concept of the advertisement was terrific enough to cover up the sloppy costumes, acting, and quality.

Group: Global warming could cost Ohio its buckeyes

The issue with global warming is significantly affecting our human society as days pass by. For instance, it is now being said that the buckeye trees that tolerate a wide climate range, which is beneficial to our community is being harmed due to the pollution and the increasing matter of global warming. Here in this town of Ohio, the buckeye trees have set a great influence on the society, by naming its football team after the name of the tree. They even call it the ‘Ohio pride’. However the fate of this trees are in great danger because of what people have done in the past, and even today.
Although this matter only occurred in specific part of Northern America, this is, I can only say, the very beginning of the negatives of the global warming affect. Slowly but soon, the global warming will eventually create such problems that will affect individual local, probably motivating them to change their behaviors toward the environments. This article possesses no bias, for it only states the crisis of the issue held in Ohio. The purpose of this article is to at least start motivating people around the globe to be aware of the problem that is about to face us hazardously. The effect of this media is great, in a way that almost all population in world obtain newspapers in their hand, stuffing their brains with current knowledge.
Articles contain powerful influence in that the wordings that the author uses may provoke readers into action, in a positive way.

title: Climate Change Could Be Impetus For Wars, Other Conflicts, Expert Says

The article suggests that climate change, in short global warming, may lead to armed conflict due to a lack of freshwater resources, food insecurity, natural disasters and environmental migration. The main source of information comes from Jürgen Scheffran, a research scientist in the Program in Arms Control, Disarmament and International Security and the Center for Advanced BioEnergy Research at Illinois. He is one of the people who are concerned that ‘climate-change-related damage’ would result in fierce competition for natural resources, thus triggering wars and other conflicts in the future.

This article was written by Science daily, a well know source for the latest news and research but it doesn’t mention the name of the writer. This undermines the credibility of the content because no matter how popular Science daily may be, the readers do not even know if the writer is qualified to discuss such subject. However, the fact that the writer quotes Jürgen Scheffran’s statements makes the content of the article seem pretty convincing due to Scheffran’s reputation.

Out of all the articles I have read so far, this one is most biased, I should say. The writer presents only a one-sided argument, thus limiting the reader’s point of view by omitting the counter argument. In the end, he sort of adds a different point of view as “However, as history has demonstrated, humans are quite capable of adapting to changing climate conditions as long as those changes are moderate.” Also, he mentions that raised public awareness and educational efforts to deal with climate change are taking place today. Yet, these statements are not direct refutations of his statement that global warming could potentially lead to wars. I am not sure why the writer avoided presenting counter arguments. But by doing so, he is greatly undermining the reliability of his only article.

I think that the writer depended too much on a single source for the information. Other than the direct quotations of Jürgen Scheffran, there seems to be no other source having been used. Therefore, this article lacks diversity in the content, information, and view points, thus being very limited in scope.

Stereotypes - Jennifer Shin

What stereotypes do people have about you? What stereotypes do you have about other people? Are stereotypes beneficial or harmful? Why do you think this?

There are several different stereotypes that people have about me. Among them, the most frequent misconception is that I am a scary, not nice, and rebellious person. Due to my ‘scary’ first impression, some people think that I am very quiet person and do not like to talk nor socialize with others. Yes, it is true that I am not the kind of person who goes up to strangers and start a conversation, but actually I am a very talkative, open-minded person who loves to socialize with people.

When I first came to TCIS, I did not have many friends at first. I was not used to the new environment, and for some reason people would avoid talking to me. After a few months, I made many friends and got to know a lot people. The funny thing was that, most of them confessed that they were intimidated to talk to me because they thought I was scary, and assumed that I would be one of those ‘mean girls’. I thought it was silly, but at the same time funny because I never got that kind of comment from my former school.

It is funny that most people tend to judge people by their first impression. Even though it is so not reasonable or scientific, but people still say that first impressions are important. Which I totally agree with. When I was young, I usually labeled people by their looks, and I would not try to know people that had bad impressions. However, as I grew up I realized that first impressions are mostly wrong. The people that I though would be nice and sincere turned out to be mean ones, and the people that I thought would be boring or mean actually ended up being my best mates. I decided to stop judging people by their looks when I entered middle school.

By the kind of stereotypes I had and the stereotypes people had about me, I realized stereotypes are never good nor either right. When you have stereotypes against something, you usually do not even try to know or go through the thing that you do not even know well. You might be missing something very good and special. If it was not a good experience as you predicted, you can just take it as a lesson and learn something from it. I believe that everything is worth to try. However, stereotypes are what creates prejudice, and obstructs people from having more diverse and amazing experiences.

The source I found today was an old television commercial of the ‘Natural Resources Defense Council’ that was released in 1990. The advertisement was mainly warning the viewers about the damage that the global warming would cause, and other several natural pollutions too. Even though the commercial was created almost twenty years ago, there were a lot of data and prediction about the global warming and many people were already concerned about it. The fact that made me sad was that, back then the attitudes of the public were positive and had hope that the situation can get better. However, now the global warming had gotten worse, and we are threaten by the sudden natural changes, although we could have done something earlier.

The opening scene with Tom Cruise and the appearance of other several celebrities like Whoopie Goldberg and Demi Moore etc. was an effective attention catcher. For another reason I think the producers’ casts many celebrities is because people tend to admire movie stars, and believe that whatever they do it is something important and pays more attention to them. I also liked the experts that appeared between every scene talking about the global warming. When professional experts of a certain field, like attorneys and analyst, appears they give a more trustworthy impression to the audience, while the celebrities who appeared previously provides a more friendly impression to the spectators. Not only talking about the global warming, but providing information about the harm of air, water, and land pollution, which causes the global warming, makes the viewers realize how serious the situation is. Showing parts with the babies make us think about our children and descendants, and offers a message that on orders to protect out children, we should stop the global warming. I also think that choosing John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ as the soundtrack was a smart choice for the advertisement because it is a famous song and the lyrics is about an ideal world, which goes with the texts of the commercial. For a campaign, I think it was a little too long. Probably because the producers were trying to put a lot of information in it, but six minutes is a little too long for an ad, and it might be a little boring for the audience.

"What stereotypes do people have about you? What stereotypes do you have about other people? Are stereotypes beneficial or harmful? Why do you think this?"

The most frequent stereotype people have about me is that I am arrogant. This is so not true! In fact, I am very shy when I meet people for the first time. So I often stay quiet and still. However, other people think that I am being arrogant and they say I have this stuck-up expression. In reality, my face was stiff due to nervousness.

One of the stereotypes I used to have toward the smart people is that they were all geeks. What I mean by geeks is those who study and study 365 days and do things related to academics only. However, by coming to TCIS, my stereotypes were all shattered because people here were intelligent and also active in sports, drama, and fine arts. Besides studying, these people had interests in other areas and were equally competent. This came as a geat shock to me... I sort of thought, "God, it's not fair." =)

I think most of the streotypes tend to be negative and therefore, harmful, I should say. The reason stereotypes tend to be negative is because they rely on the first impression, rumors, or imagined conclusions to judge another person. Then that person is confined to the false image already created before him. For instance, most Americans believe that all Koreans are good at math. Well... I am a Korean but I am terrible at math! Whenever I couldn't solve a math problem, I felt like I was letting down my country and myself.

Sleeping In – The postal service
MUSIC ~~~!

[Last week I had the strangest dream
That everything was exactly how it seemed
Where there was never any mystery
Of who shot John F. Kennedy
It was just a man with something to prove
Slightly bored and severely confused
He steadied his rifle with his target in the center
And became famous on that day in November
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in . . .

Again last night I had that strange dream
Where everything was exactly how it seemed
No concerns about the world getting warmer
People thought that they were just being rewarded
For treating others as they'd like to be treated
For obeying stop signs and curing diseases
For mailing letters with the address of the sender
Now we can swim any day in November
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in . . .]

This song is global warming, of course. When I first heard this song, I simply thought it was an anti-global warming song. However, looking closely at the lyrics the intended message, I realized that the song contained deeper meaning.

First of all, the song is way sarcastic than I initially thought. It mentions the man who killed JFK saying that he “was just a man with something to prove slightly bored and severely confused.” I think this man symbolizes the entire humanity who is so ignorant and confused as what the consequences of global warming will lead to.

“People thought that they were just being rewarded For treating others as they'd like to be treated…”; this part implies that the people are actually “aware” of global warming. It’s just that they don’t “understand” what the ultimate outcome of global warming would be like. Therefore, they have “No concerns about the world getting warmer.”

The most cynical part of this song is “Now we can swim any day in November.” This pretty much tells the singer’s point of view. It implies that the ice melting caused by the global warming will lead to a strange phenomenon, thus forecasting the catastrophic future. Also, “Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in . . .” this part symbolizes the neglect and ignorance of the people today. Basically, they are taking the risks of global warming seriously and prefer to close their eyes.

The overall message of this song is to open our eyes and ears and take an interest in the world around us. Due to the embedded sarcasm and deep anti-global warming feeling, the song is considered to be a bit biased. However, it did a good job of raising our awareness of global warming.

JADIE KIM---------------- GLOBAL WARMING

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/sep/07/food.foodanddrink

Title: UN says eat less meat to curb global warming

This article presents one solution to current global warming: “eating less meat.” It says meat production creates more greenhouse gas because animals, particularly cows, emit methane, a global warming factor 23 times more effective as carbon dioxide.

The title of the article attracts people’s attention since not many people have heard that eating less meat will reduce global warming. Also, a giant picture of meat brings curiosity, making the readers to continue reading the passage. The catchy title and picture seemed a little suspicious to me at first since I found it too sensational.

The article starts off with “Dr Rajendra, chair of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which last year earned a joint share of the Nobel Peace Prize, said that people should then go on to reduce their meat consumption even further.” This statement seems pretty powerful since Pachauri is such an influential person. The writer is also appealing to the sense of authority. He often quotes “The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization” in order to prove to the readers the validity of his article.

However, the writer sometimes leaves out important information or rather a lack of further explanation. For instance when he says, “The agency has also warned that meat consumption is set to double by the middle of the century”, he doesn’t explain how or why such thing will happen. For me as a reader, this statement sounds doubtful and untrustworthy since I have no idea where such conclusion came from. Also, when he says, [ “Tomorrow, Pachauri will speak at an event hosted by animal welfare group Compassion in World Farming, which has calculated that if the average UK household halved meat consumption that would cut emissions more than if car use was cut in half.”], there is no evidence whatsoever to back up such statement.

Other than eating less meat, the writer includes an alternative point of view: “[However, he also stressed other changes in lifestyle would help to combat climate change.’That's what I want to emphasize: we really have to bring about reductions in every sector of the economy.']”. This helps the readers to take a look the issue in diverse perspectives. Furthermore, the writer introduces several counter arguments from Professor Robert Watson who says that “government could help educate people about the benefits of eating less meat, but it should not 'regulate'.’Eating less meat would help, there's no question about that, but there are other things.'” By presenting counter arguments, the writer is making his article a more balanced and dependable source.

Stereotype Ashlee Shin

"What stereotypes do people have about you? What stereotypes do you have about other people? Are stereotypes beneficial or harmful? Why do you think this?"

Usually people have Asian stereotypes against me, that I am strong at mathematic and good at memorization.
Also because of my physical appearance, I am mostly looked upon as short little girl. Due to stereotype, others around me tend to set high expectations for me, even when I don’t meet those requirements.

Likewise, I tend to form standards of other people based on their physical image and conventional notion. However the physical appearance sometimes is far from what that person really is inside. First impression mostly determines that person’s perception.

Most of the times, stereotypes are harmful, because they hurt the other’s feelings. Not only myself, but also with others, many people tend to construct stereotype on other people by their first impression, which isn’t always correct. However there are few rare occasions when some are benefited by its stereotypes. For instance, for those who implant positive impression, therefore giving favorable stereotype. Nevertheless, preconception for any type of thing is damaging. No one knows what, or who the person (thing) is unless they deal with the matter. Assumption is never advantageous, although it may give bit of idea, in terms of prediction, which also is insecure.

For those of bloggers who still believe that the global warming is one of the myth, or an exaggeration that the media is putting on society to decrease the emission of the waste that we put out.
However, as IB Biology (sl) student who currently have learned lesson on ecology, Global warming is imminent, and its solution must be acted upon by us any time sooner.

WARMING IS FOUND TO DISRUPT SPECIES
As other articles presented on New York Times, this specific article also has the purpose to inform the audiences with the matter of global warming that is imminent in the present days. The article could provoke readers to think more about the seriousness of the global warming. This article certainly isn’t biased against anything, for it states many professionals and their quotes, which shows its authorities (and authorities in most cases are not prejudiced against anyone). The affect of this article is to enlighten the environmental status on Earth with excessive carbon dioxide emission.

Science Panel Calls Global Warming ‘Unequivocal’
The article states numerous quotes from those who approve their social state, in other words, they do care what they say to the public, which help us to escalate our credibility to the quotes. Moreover, this article contains tenable report results such as ‘Intergovernmental Panel Climate Change’ and ‘World Meteorological Organization’. This evidences tells that it is extremely difficult to be prejudiced against anything, especially when the article states its direct specific source as their support. The purpose of this article is to ensure the popularity, once again, that the dispute over global warming should meet its end, and be sure with the environmental crisis. Global warming is true and its calamity is severely affecting us. The author’s intention must have been something related to convincing the audiences in terms of bettering our deteriorating environment.

Global Warming - TV (3)

Jennifer Shin

http://video.naver.com/2008083018415435800

The media I found this time was a campaign commercial that was created by the ‘Environmental Defense Fund’, which is an environmental protection organization. The basic theme of the advertisement is promoting the use of public transportation. When the subway in New York City passes by the ventilation fan, the polar bear looking balloons forms in to a polar bear silhouette. After the train completely passes by the balloons shrinks back again, and totally loses its shape. By showing the connection of the polar bear balloon and the train, delivers the message to ‘prevent global warming by using public transportation’. It is trying to say that small things like taking the subway can stop global warming, and as a result save the polar bears that are suffering from the melting glaciers.

I think the brilliant idea of the ad is the key point of this television commercial, which totally grabs the attention of the viewers. It is a very simple concept and I think the producer did a successful job in creating a commercial that is easy to watch, but also has a strong message at the same time. I personally think that when the subway passes by and the balloon shrinks back again, to me it looked like the polar bears were actually dying, and it did created a sort of sympathy while watching the clip. There were not a lot of sentences, and even the sentences that appeared were very easy that I think it makes it appropriate for all kinds of audience. By closing up the signboard at the end that says ‘subways’ reveals the purpose of the ad, and the following slogans like ‘Help save the planet’ and ‘Ride, don’t drive’ leads the audience to the conclusion that riding subways can help saving the planet. Although it was a short and simple commercial, I think it is a very effective one that can delivers the theme to the audience successfully, and makes the spectators think about global warming once again.
