Sleeping In – The postal service
MUSIC ~~~!
[Last week I had the strangest dream
That everything was exactly how it seemed
Where there was never any mystery
Of who shot John F. Kennedy
It was just a man with something to prove
Slightly bored and severely confused
He steadied his rifle with his target in the center
And became famous on that day in November
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in . . .
Again last night I had that strange dream
Where everything was exactly how it seemed
No concerns about the world getting warmer
People thought that they were just being rewarded
For treating others as they'd like to be treated
For obeying stop signs and curing diseases
For mailing letters with the address of the sender
Now we can swim any day in November
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in . . .]
This song is global warming, of course. When I first heard this song, I simply thought it was an anti-global warming song. However, looking closely at the lyrics the intended message, I realized that the song contained deeper meaning.
First of all, the song is way sarcastic than I initially thought. It mentions the man who killed JFK saying that he “was just a man with something to prove slightly bored and severely confused.” I think this man symbolizes the entire humanity who is so ignorant and confused as what the consequences of global warming will lead to.
“People thought that they were just being rewarded For treating others as they'd like to be treated…”; this part implies that the people are actually “aware” of global warming. It’s just that they don’t “understand” what the ultimate outcome of global warming would be like. Therefore, they have “No concerns about the world getting warmer.”
The most cynical part of this song is “Now we can swim any day in November.” This pretty much tells the singer’s point of view. It implies that the ice melting caused by the global warming will lead to a strange phenomenon, thus forecasting the catastrophic future. Also, “Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in . . .” this part symbolizes the neglect and ignorance of the people today. Basically, they are taking the risks of global warming seriously and prefer to close their eyes.
The overall message of this song is to open our eyes and ears and take an interest in the world around us. Due to the embedded sarcasm and deep anti-global warming feeling, the song is considered to be a bit biased. However, it did a good job of raising our awareness of global warming.
