Global Warming - TV (2)

http://home.ebs.co.kr/jisike/title_group/title_index.jsp?gubun=title&gno=119

The second video clip that I found from the Internet was another episode of the television program ‘지식채널e’, which I found previously for the ‘polar bear’ video. The show talked about the Tavalu islands, and that they are in great danger because of the global warming. The Tavalu islands are a small island country that is suffering from the sea level that is increasing gradually every year. According to the video, the average temperature has increased 0.6 Celsius and that one out of nine of the Tavalu Island has already sunk in 1999. The video shows the suffering of the Tavalu residents by introducing one family that lives in the islands. The camera shows their lifestyle and their concerns of the natural disaster they are going through. However, even though the Tuvalu inhabitants are the first climate insurgents, the international law does not confirm ‘climate insurgents’ as actual insurgents. In a result, that they cannot get any official help from the UN. Even their neighbor country Australia refused the emigration of the Tuvalu people, and New Zealand is only admitting seventy-five people a year.

The show successes in arousing the viewer’s sympathy by continuously showing the sinking Tuvalu Island and how the people suffer from the climate. In addition, by providing information of the global warming gives, a direction of what is causing these problems and that human are responsible of the global warming. It also said that in sixty years most of the island countries will sink, which relates to a global audience and makes the audience sense reality. By showing the life of one family, who lives in the Tavalu Island, shows the prospectors how serious the issue is. Showing the family’s concerns and prayers, says that not only other countries like America, Australia, New Zealand, but also the whole universe should be a part of helping these peoples; ‘Don’t let people forget us; we cannot survive this by ourselves.’ Using the soundtrack ‘Over the rainbow’ and creating subtitles that relates to the family’s situation gives a hopeful atmosphere.
It also brings an effect of making the viewers feel sympathy against people. I think it had a great proportion of providing information and pointing out the problem.

JADIE KIM- newspaper article2

This article is about the decline of Arctic ice and how the decline has become steeper recently. The writer says that the Arctic melt will increase global warming because “open water absorbs more of the Sun's energy than ice does.” However, he does not give any examples and explanation to support this argument. As a result, his argument loses credibility and many readers will not even understand what he is trying to say.

Looking at the title of this article, “Arctic ice 'is at tipping point'”, the readers are likely to assume that the writer believes in global warming. Thus, the article appears biased from the first glance.
The writer’s argument that “the ice-covered area has fallen below its 2005 level, which was the second lowest on record” is backed up by the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). Since NSIDC is a reliable source, the information sounds valid and convincing.

Also, when the writer says, “The area covered by ice on 26 August measured 5.26 million sq km (2.03 million sq miles), just below the 2005 low of 5.32 million sq km (2.05 million sq)”, he is using scientific data to support this argument.

The article presents the graph of Arctic sea extent in which 2008 graph shows a steeper decline than at the same time last year. The Graph can be a powerful source and is likely to convince the readers more easily, since people tend to be more attracted to visuals than words.

In the article, the writer often refers to just “scientists” and “some researchers” instead of actual names of the people. This greatly undermines his argument and the reliability of the information he presents.

“That [Arctic ice melt] will bring, including the chance to drill for oil and gas. Burning that oil and gas would increase levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere still further.”; this quote contains too many assumptions. First of all, the writer suggests the economic opportunities out of blue and he continues to say burning oil would increase greenhouse gases. Suddenly the writer throws all these “conjectures” without single explanation. He just assumes the readers to understand his argument but it lacks coherence and leaves the readers with more confusion.

JADIE KIM- newspaper article

This article presents two sides of global warming issue. The writer states “Many global warming experts say the phenomenon, if unchecked, is capable of altering the world's climate and geography. In the worst-case scenario, experts say oceans could rise to overwhelming and catastrophic levels, flooding cities and altering seashores.” He also presents the counter argument by saying “Other scientists and observers, a minority compared to those who believe the warming trend is something ominous, say it is simply the latest shift in the cyclical patterns of a planet's life.” By presenting both sides of arguments for Global warming, the writer effectively maintains neutrality.

The information contained in this article comes from pretty accurate sources. For example when the writer says “The average surface temperature has warmed one degree Fahrenheit (0.6 degrees Celsius) during the last century, according to the National Research Council,” he indicates the information comes from the National Research Council, thus enhances his argument’s reliability. Besides, he cites that his sources of information are the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, commonly referred to as the IPCC, and the EPA, all being dependable sources.

To make his argument cogent, the writer uses specific name of the person. For instance, he states, ["For the last 30 years, there's no way there's anything natural that can explain it," Stephen Schneider, a professor of environmental studies at Stanford University in California, said.] By stating the actual name of the professor, the writer is using the authority of the professor to convince his readers. To make his argument even more persuasive, he says, “Many scientific organizations share Schneider's view, ranging from the national academies of the countries that comprise the G8 to the National Research Council, the American Meteorological Society and the American Geophysical Union.” Again, the writer mentions the names of the official organizations taking, proving the information is authoritative.

If I were to evaluate this writer, I should say his writing is pretty unbiased and that he tries to be informative rather than persuasive. The most obvious reason is that he presents both sides of an argument, thus avoiding partiality. Yet, looking at the overall information, I have come to a conclusion that the writer believes human action caused global warming since he seems to focus more on that point of view, though he surely states some counter argument against it. Most of all, the article ends with, [Exactly how much it's going to warm up, we don't know," Schneider said. "That it's going to warm up? I'd bet anything on that."]. This is his true opinion but he tries to show his readers other side of the issue.

Coral reef need new protection to survive global warming

Coral Reef needs a desperate help with global help. This article provokes the readers to think about the carbon dioxide emission that we produce in daily life, which eventually cause global warming. Also the intention of author for writing this articles is to acknowledge the readers to know the severity of global warming, affecting the environment around us. Again, this article portrays the message that all of us should decrease the use of carbon dioxide emitting substances to save our natural environment, in this case, coral reef. Also I find no evidence of prejudice from this article. The reason for no bias from this article is probably because the subject itself is about global warming, only including the natural and the human nature and their act. In other words, there are no two parties to be biased against; if there is, human beings would be only one to be biased. And in the end, it is evident that global warming crisis is due to people’s fault.

Xcel to Disclose Global Warming Risks

The article is from the New York Times, which definitely gives the credibility for society. Personally, the name of the newspaper first gives me trust. This newspaper has online homepage, allowing people in all over the world to have access, and offline physical newspaper. Because the newspaper articles are worldwide open to all people, all articles should have gone through severe censorship before published.
This message is giving the public or specifically, the coal-fired power plants builder, another warning, to be cautious of our spending on the waste matter that harms the globe as a whole.
If I were one of the mass producers of the coal-fired power, I would be cautious of my business, for it is greatly affecting the world.
From my perspective, there is no bias evident in this article. All it does is notifying with the updated information on global warming. Therefore I can conclude that this specific article shows no prejudice against any party.

Global Warming (TV)

http://home.ebs.co.kr/jisike/subject_group/subject_index.jsp?gubun=content&gno=92

The video I found in the Internet was a short clip that was televised on EBS, a national channel of Korean television. It was mainly talking about the concerns of global warming, and as a result what may happen to the polar bears that live in the North Pole. The video clip did not directly talk about global warming, but talked about how rapidly the glacier has been melting for the past decades due to the global warming. Which leads us to the fact that there are not enough areas for the polar bears to live. The video was also promoting the fact that the reason these kinds of natural issues are occurring is because of human beings, and that it is our responsibility to solve these problems.

Even though the video was not even five minutes long, I thought it was effective enough to enlighten the viewers and provide them a message. However, the part that I found interesting was that the video talked about how serious global warming by taking the polar bears as an example. The video chose the polar bears as a medium that refers to the victims of global warming. There are positive effects about it, but at the same time negative effects exist too. By using polar bears, which are friendly and be-loved animals, the audience can relate to the issue more easily. In addition, it catches the attention of the spectators by using cute video clips and photos of the polar bears. However, I also thought that the video was focusing too much on the polar bears that it did not really speak about global warming which is causing everything. The video should have provide some kind of information about global warming, in instance how can we stop global warming, or any counter plans to save the polar bears. It only discussed about how the polar bears were suffering from global warming and provided information like how much glacier melt through the past and how many polar bears died, which arouses the viewers attention. Anyways, I thought it would have be better if they mentioned about the global warming more.

Reflection

Of the various forms of mass media, I feel that for me, the Internet is the most influential. It might not come as a surprise, considering I am a teenager in the Age of Information. However, it is true; the Internet has become a medium that is inseparable to our everyday lives. Not only do I use the Internet for entertainment, but I use it for my academics as well. As many schools today now require students to work on assignments by computer, it is natural that youths now a day use the Internet to search information, write papers, and get accustomed to computers.

I also use the Internet for entertainment as well. I read news articles on the web, listen to music on websites. I sometimes watch movies and post notes on blogs. Although some people today might be concerned that kids today might get addicted to computers, I can assure you that I have very healthy computer habits. It might be true that youths can be exposed to unhealthy information through the Internet, and there is always the danger of getting your personal information stolen and exposed by hackers. However, it cannot be denied the internet is convenient and fast, and that you can get almost any kind of information you need. That is why I consider that the Internet is without a doubt a medium that makes my life richer.

The Radio

Radio transmits signals that carry information systematically by changing some properties of the radiated waves, such as amplitude, frequency, or phase. The signals are then converted into sound that carries information. Radio can be used in three different fields: electromagnetic waves and experimentation; wireless communication and technical development; and radio broadcasting and commercialization. Today, radio takes many forms such as radio broadcasting, wireless networks and mobile communications of all types. Before the television was invented, commercial radio broadcasts included not only news and music but also several forms of entertainment like oral dramas. Radio is unique among methods of dramatic presentation in that its only medium is sound.

TV broadcasting
The Television broadcasting is a combination of diverse news events and other social information, which includes sports coverage, weather forecasts, traffic reports, commentary, and other material that the broadcast. The television is the most widely known medium, for it also incorporates the visual to aid the audiences.

Radio
The radio is one of the mediums, which is used to transfer discussion and broadcast of news. It is available both in local and syndicated forms. Because radio is carried through satellite radio networks, at some occasion radio signal is weak, or easily distracted by other radio frequency.

Books
Books are written medium of media. It is the most reliable resource, because all books must go trough examination before publicly printed. Also books are prominent material for older people these days, because they are tangible when compared to other technological medium such as Internet.

Film
Out of all media medium, films are the most profound way of portraying the matter. Recordings of images make films. These days, animated techniques and special effects play major role in film business.

Out of the entire mass communication medium, film and television influences me the most. Those two mediums are the most frequently interacted substances for me, especially. They provoke me to think differently from my old perspective, which in a way is innovating myself.

I enjoy watching movies whenever they are on the theatre. I keep myself updated even on the Internet for upcoming movies, whether Hollywood movies or underground. Even if the movie doesn't seem to portray any of the profound thought provoking themes, there always exists at least one lesson for us to take in. Yes, there are movies that are rated restricted; there are contents that must be dealt to give the society a moral. Moreover there are other kinds of movies that give such profound meanings that are most of the time, extremely elusive. And I enjoy pondering on such ideas even after the movie is done playing. I also consider each factors of the movie valuable, for there must be purpose for inserting features.

Furthermore, television is the medium that I interact almost everyday, whether online, or physical television. With visuals and sound combined, it greatly affects myself as well as others. Also television is always on everywhere, especially in Korea. Moreover, there are numerous programs that supplement the viewers’ need for information all the time. There are more than 200 television channels that are on all the time. Therefore, television broadcastings are up to date as it is with Internet online broadcasting. They continuously update with the information that are happening with the world. The satellite also becomes the most important factor here. Satellite shooting information from one side of the Earth to the very opposite side of the Earth simultaneously is powerful in this media field.

Reflection- media

Jadie Kim

The most influential medium for me is music. I enjoy listening to Neo Punk or Emo- band music because their melody and lyrics are so compelling. They often convey a feeling of revolt and aggression which I always wanted to shout out to the world. Due to the exposure to this particular music, my eyes opened to the dark side of the world. I realized that the world was not so pure after all; it was full of deterioration and vice.

It may sound ironic but listening to their violent language and shrieks gave me peace of mind. I think Neo punk and Emo style of music is especially appealing because it statisfies the essential human desire of revolution or disobidience. Also, the fact that I was an emotional teenager when I first listened to Neo-Punk may explain why I was particulary attracted to it.

The Internet

Jadie Kim

The Internet is a global network which interconnects all the computer networks across the Continent using fiber-optic cables and wireless connections. It also provides the Internet users with a vast environment for e-mail, web resources, online chat and games, and so on. Nowdays millions of people in the world have the access to the Internet. Using the Internet Protocol, the users can send data to one another freely. Each computer has a distict IP address which indentifies itself from other computers in the world. The Internet is very useful for its up-to-date technology and its vast source of information which allowed me to find the definition of the Internet itself! However, one of the most controversial issues that have recently risen is that people exploit anonymity of the Internet for an imposture or verbal attacks against a person.

What is Mass Media?

Mass media, also known as mass communication, is a particular media that was devised to reach a larger audience or market. The mass media, although has been existing for a long time, was actually called 'mass media' for the first time in the 1920s when new technology such as printing and recording allowed massive duplication of materials. However, due to the expansion of digital communication technology such as cell phone, and Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB), the primary definition of mass media is obscure.

Biography of SSK

Jennifer Shin
I was born in New Haven, Connecticut in the year 1990, July 1st. I lived there for a while and came to Korea when I was six years old. At the first time it was hard to adapt the new environment and language. Communication was the hardest part for me, but I made it anyways. Even though my Korean was not that good, I was sent to a public Korean school. It was hard for me at the first time but I made some friends and pretty much enjoyed my years in Korean school. One of the biggest changes in my life was coming to TCIS. Although I was born in the states I attended Korean elementary, junior high, and high schools for my whole life. Suddenly going to a English speaking school was a big switch for me. There are some parts I like about this school and some parts I don't, but I stopped missing my Korean school life anymore.

Jadie Kim
I was born in Texas and I lived there for 5 years. Then I moved to Korea and stayed here until 7th grade. After that I went back to the states and lived in New York and California. I did not like living in the states because I was too far away from my hometown and felt like I was losing my identity. Now attending TCIS, an international school in Korea, I am much more assured and statiesfied with myself. The great part about TCIS is that I don't have to try to act like a 'Pro-American' anymore because TCIS repects me as a Korean American who loves Korea so much that sometimes appears to despise the US! Haha....

Ashlee Shin
Born in Los Angeles, California in 1990.08.30.
I came back to Korea when infant! And ever since I lived in Korea. I attended Korean elementary school, and transferred to small foreign school at my hometown, called Jeonbuk Foreign School. Then I came to TCIS during the second semester of 8th grade. Currently I am a dorm student, at Stone dorm.
I love milk… and….. I love my life just the way it is, assignments pouring down on me as if I’m standing in the middle of the sea shore with waves!:)
Last thing, I would like to make my senior year the most memorable year at TCIS.
